Autónomo banks that collaborate with both Seguridad Social and AEAT
If you’re setting up as an autónomo in Spain, choosing the right bank matters more than you think. Your bank must collaborate with Seguridad Social to pay your monthly cuota. Without a bank that collaborates with Seguridad Social there is no way to be autonomo. And then, to have your taxes automatically deducted by AEAT, you need to have a bank that collaborates with AEAT. When choosing a bank, consider the following three requirements:
- It must have a Spanish IBAN
- It must be with a bank that collaborates with Seguridad Social
- It doesn’t have to but it makes life easier if it also collaborate with AEAT (Agencia Tributaria)
Many banks in Spain only meet one or two of these conditions, and the two official lists of collaborators don’t fully overlap. Neobanks are a particular grey area, some work with one agency, some with the other, and some with neither. It’s important to check this carefully before opening an account.
What if my bank only cooperates with Seguridad Social and not AEAT?
If your bank collaborates with Seguridad Social but not AEAT, you can still pay your taxes manually through any bank that offers a Spanish IBAN. That process is less convenient but completely valid and legally acceptable.
My full breakdown of what it means to be a “collaborating bank”, how payments work, and what to do if your bank only collaborates with one agency is here: Which banks work with Seguridad Social and AEAT?
List of banks that collaborate with Seguridad Social and AEAT
I’ve gone through both official lists and pulled out the autonomo banks that are both collaborators with Seguridad Social and AEAT. I’ve done my best to get it right but it can be updated periodically as new banks join. There is currently a process by the neobanks to become Seguridad Social collaborators but it is still being tabled.
The originals lists are also linked under External Resources for cross-checking or updates.
I’ve grouped the banks into two categories:
- Spanish national banks
- Caja/Caixa Rural banks, which typically operate at a regional level
