What is alta and baja for autónomos?

Alta and baja are the official terms for registering and deregistering your freelance business with the tax and social security systems.

What is alta and baja?

Alta means you’re officially starting your activity as a self-employed worker. It involves registering with:

  1. Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) using Modelo 036, to tell them what type of activity you’ll do and under what tax regime

  2. Seguridad Social to start making monthly social security contributions under the RETA system

You must do both before you issue your first invoice. No backdating allowed.

Baja means you’re stopping your self-employed activity. You file:

  • Modelo 036 again with AEAT to notify the tax office

  • A separate form (usually online) with Seguridad Social to stop paying your monthly cuota

You need to do this if you’re stopping work for a while or closing down completely. If you don’t file your baja, you’ll keep getting charged Social Security even if you’re not earning.

Can you go on and off?

Yes, I know of autónomos who register and deregister multiple times throughout the year, especially if their work is seasonal or irregular or it’s in addition to a full time job.

Make sure you file properly each time to avoid fines or surprise bills.

It is something you can do yourself with a digital certificate or your gestor can do it for you.

If you are on the Tarifa Plana (cheaper 1st year) and go baja, you will lose the cheaper rate.

Don’t get confused

Salaried employees use the expression “estoy de baja” or “estoy en baja” when they are on sick leave or temporary absence from work due to an accident or other reason.

Technically, if you are on sick leave as an autónomo you can be “en/de baja” but when people talk about alta/baja for autónomos it means registered/deregistered.
