Autonomo/s/pain

I moved from Melbourne to Barcelona where I’ve been freelancing and start-upping and through the wringer multiple times.

The transition from Australian government employee to Spanish freelancer has been… interesting.

I started a project with my accountant that ended up with us writing a handbook for foreign autónomos in Spain. The project didn’t go ahead in the end but it’s content that I wish I had access to when I first started. With her permisison, I’m publishing it here along with some other information I’ve learned along the way.

Please be aware:

  • I’m not an accountant or lawyer
  • I am sharing my experience and my research that I’ve made for my businesses
  • I strongly encourage you to double and triple check and will provide official links with each article

Although I have taken care with the content, laws can change and situations differ. Read the linked the references. Speak to your gestor

Also, don’t blindly trust ChatGPT or other AI tools, always check source materials or with your gestor. I have used it in some research for the articles and I’ve picked up many, many mistakes. I have the advantage of being able to use AI with my experience as a filter. I will always include links to AEAT, SEPE, and other official websites which I encourage you to read.

Feel free to let me know if there’s something that needs updating on the site.

It’s only in English, I do speak Spanish but I don’t have enough confidence in my technical communication.

If you’re wondering about the animals, I almost fell asleep researching stock photos of “business” so went with what I love <3

As an editor and avid fan of style guides, it should technically in Spanish be autónomo/a/os/as… but for SEO purposes, I’m going with the anglicised autonomo. I might throw in some autónomos also for SEO purposes.

Also, yes I know how the URL reads. It’s a little play on words that makes me laugh. All the best with your business 🙂

Your friendly, experienced autonoma, here with some hard-won answers to questions I once had myself.

Let’s talk taxes

I'm not a lawyer or an accountant and I won't be able answer questions that should be directed towards them. But if you feel like sending me a message, feel free 🙂
